My experience with Dr. Afrin was a little different than most I have read. First of all, I do not know of anyone who has seen him that did NOT come away with a positive diagnosis. He clearly want s to make a name for himself and does certainly genuinely care about the spreading of awareness. When I started seeing him in 2010, my platelets were critically low. He treated me for 3 years and tried every medicine and blamed very thing that happened to me on a MCAD flare up. Meanwhile, my platelets remained low to critical. I sent my bone marrow biopsy to Dr. Aiken in Boston, who said there was it was not prepped correctly to diagnose MCAD. He agreed that I probably have it, but the ITP was not related and needed to be greeted urgently and separately.

I finally got a consult at Mayo in Jacksonville, who looked at how Afrin had treated me and said " this is all over the board. Did he know what he was treating?"

So I returned to Charleston and found a hematologist who is treating my ITP, and I am getting better. He agrees that there is something to Mast Cell diseases and is willing to treat me for them, but first wants to keep me from dying of ITP.

Now Thai I am no longer a patient of Afrins, I am hearing from many other MUSC doctors that Afrin is not highly regarded. All seem to agree that he is better left in a lab to do research and not see patients.

At some point, I plan to visit Dr. Aken for a consult. He has impressed me with his straightforwardness.

I hope this helps anyone looking for a specialist. It is not meant to discourage patients of Dr. Afrin that seem to be receiving relief.
