Any advice?  What if I'm allergic to the filling???  This is kind of freaking me out!

I worry a lot about dental appointments too, have you had one since being ill? Are you premedicating?

Be open and discuss things with your dentist, bring rescue meds and Epi with you, ask them to proceed slowly when exposing you to things you might react to so you can advise if you are symptomatic. Inform them of all of your triggers, latex etc

I have never had problems with dental cleanings of having a filling filled. They use lidocaine, which is the same thing they use when you get a BMB. As long as you take your emergency meds with you, you shoudl be fine. If you think that you will stress over it, you could always double your morning doseage before you go.

that reminded me, you can ask them to use freezing that is free from preservatives, most offices have both with and without on hand

ask them which type of freezing they are using also, lidocaine, xylocaine, bupivicaine etc, just in case you have some symptoms or not, so you know what's safe for future reference

I just had some fillings done today... no problem.  To pre-medicate, I took some liquid Benadryl and Tylenol.  Any H1 would work.  I just forgot until I was sitting in the parking lot Wink  You could also add an H2.

Try not to stress!  That's probably the worst trigger.  If I'm feeling really anxious about a procedure (like the first time I got a crown... and I knew the drilling would be deep) I take my mp3 player along so I can listen to music and try to ignore what the dentist is doing.  The epinephrine in the numbing agent makes my heart race a little bit, but I've never developed any worse symptoms.

I've had symptoms from the epi, including flushing, so I asked for a local that doesn't contain it.  For a filling, that shouldn't be a problem, as the epi is used to help control bleeding, and I don't think it's necessary for a filling.

Back from the dentist.  The filliing that fell out was not very big so the dentist was able to fill it without numbing me up!

I appreciate all your help.  When I mention I'm affraid to go to the dentist my non-mc (mast cell) friends just think I'm a baby, they don't understand the reactions that can happen.
So all is well!

It's a rare person who understands a chronic condition unless she's had one.  Glad you had an easy time at the dentist's.

Okay time to fess up;
I havent been to the dentist since I was diagnosed. Embarrassed
I know, my GP got on my case. I have a crown that never felt right, but now I cant ignore it anymore. I will stop being a baby about this since you all set such a good example ! Smiley  AND, I will follow the great advice. Has anyone noticed more tenderness, &/or bleeding of gums after being diagnosed ? Like it "came with" the masto ...? Sad

Sometimes antihistamines make our mouths dry, and then the environment in our mouths becomes more hospitable to bacteria, which can cause inflammation.  Try the softest toothbrush you can find, use a mouthwash with alcohol in it, and be careful not to be too rough on your gums when brushing.  Be sure to floss (gently) every day.  If the mouthwash is too intense, dilute it a little.

Plaque under the gums (which builds up quicker in a dry mouth) can cause tenderness, irritation, and/or bleeding of gums.  Might be time for a good cleaning!  Also, swishing with salt water a few times a day can help tenderness.

I always seems to get in discussions with the hygenist and dentist about mast cells.  They usually start asking me questions when I have some clamps or cotton in my mouth.

They think it is pretty interesting, and that's o.k., but I wish they'd ask me questions when I am actually capable of forming words!

Oh well, I forgive them, at least they care!  Roll Eyes
