Swelling in right leg only
01/02/14 at 08:07:57

I'm new to the forum; I posted a little about myself way back in December as I was at the library as they were closing so I did not go into a lot of detail.

Keeping in mind that everything is connected aka unified (all scales like the hot and cold scales are one whole unified scale as is nuclear fission and fusion; they're not absolutes in this way) a paticularly uncomfortable symptom that I get is swelling in my right leg only. I know its circulatory (duh!) and its connected to hydration as not enough fluid causes the allergins to build up in my body...I'll feel my skin on my back begin to burn and itch slightly and every single time my right leg swells up. I'm thinking femoral artery.

Does this happen to any of you and what tricks besides flooding your system with purified water accord you any relief? Ideally I'm hoping to avoid it meaning: If there's any one thing that you can name more so than others as a cause please let me know. Practical reality for me right now is I can't completely stop eating everything with an artificially manipulated salicylate level. I'd love to get it down to a few things I can avoid completely.

Thanks!

Hi Susan,

This is VERY CONCERNING what you are talking about and this sound to me without a doubt to be vascular and possibly serious!   I teach English to an angiologist and we have talked masto over quite a lot and she's also had me work with her on translations of articles and presentations she has done for her field of medicine.   When you have only ONE leg swelling there is something wrong going on.   You need to have an angiologist do a good one over with you, doppler radar and mapping of your veins.   TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY!   It sound to me that your flow is not good and this would explain the edema in one leg only.   If it were masto related it would be both legs.   Yes, and the redness and itching can EASILY be explained by a vascular problem there!!   In fact, vascular problems will create rashes as well and the heat can be explained by an inflammation, which this in turn would trigger the masto!!!

Susan, please take this seriously and stop denying that there is something wrong.   You make things worse with this attitude.   The photos my doctor showed me left me horrified to the point that I'm almost paranoid now with any kind of swelling, which does indeed happen.    I've had a case of phlebitis due to my masto and yes, it was one sided, hot, heavy, itchy and RED!!   It was NOT masto!!!    Yes, it did trigger the masto because any kind of infection or inflammation needs the MCs to help fight the beast!!  This ends up triggering us!!

So, please listen, call an angiologist and get an IMMEDIATE  Shocked appointment please!!

Thanks!

The good news is I did have an full angio so my heart is fine. But I haven't had a work up on my veins. Trust me: I'm not denying it at all. In fact I have such tiny deep veins that Mayo couldn't get a line in me so they went in thru my left leg. It was the least painful and least complicated IV i've ever had but later a nurse said that they do not like to do this as it can cause blood clots. You had better believe that I then made them check my right leg for a blood clot eventhough they went in thru my left. I made them go over all of the signs and symptoms of DVT in order to rule out a blood clot at that time. But I've never forgotten it. BTW: This was in late November. It wasn't like it happened a year ago and I just 'forgot' about it, lol.

I keep saying that eventough it happens when I have a flare up of sensitivity that its NOT normal to have swelling in one leg only. I will see a specialist to have a work up on my veins; my regular doc will have no problem with it as he's interested in learning more about mast cell disorders as he's seeing more patients with it and I was able to name the exacting chemical chain reaction so i'm fortunate to have a doc who's not only not denying reality but who's willing to learn from us.

Fact is he wants me to send him this site's name so he can start reading your posts. He'll have no problem sending me to a specialist.

Thanks for your quick reply!

BTW: I had pain that MIGHT have been a heart attack and although I'm only 45 my Dad had a massive MI at 42 and everyone in his family died of heart disease so when I say they checked my heart I mean that's all they looked at when this happened as they did it in the ER on an outpatient basis. They, Mayo, just checked my heart to make sure I wasn't having an MI and to rule out heart disease itself. My heart alone received a clean bill of health. My heart might be in great shape but I'm with you:

This seems to be a serious vascular issue that's been overlooked or dismissed as being related to something else like laying in bed for 7 days with debilitating pancreatitis. They'll dismiss it as "Oh, you haven't been up enough because you're in the hospital" when no, this happens at home when I'm moving about and the swelling from last night? For the first time ever it did not go away overnight so that's what prompted me to post. Usually it returns to normal during the night but today I woke up with it less swollen but yet still swollen.

Hi Susan--I hope you're feeling good today.  It is a good idea to get that checked out.  Does the whole leg swell and is it different colored?  Signs and symptoms of a DVT include redness, pain, swelling, and skin warm to touch--usually in the calf, but can be anywhere.  If the swelling is intermittent with reactions, it could be something with your veins--with swelling, the veins and/or lymph system are not returning blood/fluid to the heart efficiently.  I developed Raynaud's about 9 months after I started getting symptoms, and I have a heart arrhythmia now too, so mast cells definitely affect the blood and heart!  Also, if you've had surgery to one side of the body or your back, that can affect the circulation too.  I wish you luck and hope you get it figured out soon Smiley Sarah
