How expensive are your meds, and does your insurance cover it?

So, here is an interesting question to compare with each other: How expensive are your meds, and does insurance cover it for you?

Each month I buy:
60 pills of zantac (300 mg prescription)
45 pills of allegra
zyrtec (over the counter)

Price for zantac and allegra: about $500
Does insurance pay?: After my deducatible of $5000/yr, yes. However, they WON'T pay for more than 30 pills of Allegra. So, although Dr. Akin has prescribed 45 Allegra pills per month for me, I have to always pay the remaining 15 out of pocket. Nice, huh?

My insurance has a 100 dollar annual deductible on name brand drugs. Most others are 10 co-pay.

Levoxyl(generic)-6.00 a month
Fibro med(generic)-10.00 a month
Costco brand ranitidine- 35.00 a year (approx)
Costco brand zyrtec- 15.95 a year
Hydroxyzine- 10.00 a month
Cromolyn- 40.00 a month
So averaging out I spend 70 a month on meds.
Costco brand ranitidine 190 pills for 8.97
Costco brand zyrtec 365 pills for 15.95
You can order these on line if there is no costco near you.

On a daily basis I take...

Synthroid ($20 w/o insurance)
Gastrocrom ($960 w/o insurance)
Singulair, 30mg ($370 w/o insurance)
OTC ranitidine (really cheap at Sam's Club)
OTC loratadine (really cheap)
OTC cetirizine (really cheap)
OTC famotidine (most $$$ of the generics, but still pretty cheap)
as needed, OTC liquid Benadryl (about $4 per bottle)
as needed, EpiPens (haven't used one in a while)

I switched my insurance plan this year to a HDHP.  My employer put in $1400... I pay up to $3600 and then I hit the "catastrophic" ceiling.  I've already met my $2400 deductible, so now I'm paying 20% until I reach $5000 Wink  You should have seen the look on the tech's face when I picked up my $960 Gastrocrom... she was clearly worried that I was going to freak out.  Nope.  I thought about it well in advance!  I'd say I pay no more than $200 for all my OTC meds in one year.  The Sam's Club membership was well worth the price, even though I don't buy anything else there.

My sons meds:

Zantac $20 month, insurance doesn't pay anything on it, we pay copay amount for fill.

Zyrtec ( he goes thru about 1 generic bottle a month) $6-7

Gastrocrom We pay $160 for 3 months, it's approx 1k per month.  If we got at local pharmacy we pay $80/month, get thru mail order get 3rd month free

His epi pen jr costs me $40.  I just had to refill because his last one expired.  It was still clear, but i'm not chancing it, worth the $40, insuranc pays approx $140.

Benadryl on hand, I prob go thru a bottle every 1-2 months, but my middle son takes it, too. so thats $6-7.
