Getting dizzy when I sit down
01/13/13 at 16:44:54

Hello everyone! So I have had dizzy spells randomly for the past 5 years, but sparingly. But over the past 5-6 days I've been getting it every time I sit down. It's really starting to scare me. Sometimes it's pretty intense and feels like I'm moving. I had some bloodwork done a few weeks ago and have been to the doctor 3 times over the past 3 weeks but the dizziness didn't really kick in until after my last appointment (I'm worried if I make another appointment they are going to tag me as a hypochondriac, or say its my anxiety, but I know it's not)  I found out from my bloodwork that I am low thyroid, skating on the line between low normal and the red flag. He gave me synthroid to try, but as I am nervous to try all new meds, I'm scared and haven't started yet. 3 years ago a different doctor tried to put me on Armour (bio identical synthroid) and I wanted to crawl out of my skin. I also found out that I have high insulin (did a fasting insulin test) but although my glucose numbers aren't great (I am overweight) I am not diabetic. The last thing I found out is that my vitamin d is still low. I was a 17 three years ago and have been taking 2,000 units ever since and I have only gone up to a 21. Last year the doctor prescribed me the super dose of 50,000 units of vitamin d, but I couldn't tolerate it. It kind of spun me out and made me feel weird, so I stopped. Also had slightly elevated white blood cells and high c reactive protein(I've had these two flags come up for the past three years)  Anyways, I was hoping that someone might have an idea or suggestion regarding this dizziness I have been experiencing. Super worried Undecided. Thanks!!!

Hi Brigitte,

Low thyroid can cause dizziness, usually worse in the morning and better in the afternoon.  This is one of the less known symptoms.  I've found I feel so much better on enough thyroid to keep me slightly above the middle range.  It can take some adjusting to get it right, but if you felt bad on armour, then you might want to try another type.  There can be variations in generics, so my doctor recommended Synthroid.  I also have Hashimoto's antibodies.

If it's not thyroid, and your BP isn't off, then you might want to see an ENT.  A friend of mine had some kind of crystals in the fluid in his inner ear (or something like that...I'm no ear expert!) that the regular doctor couldn't detect.  The ENT figured out that was the cause of his dizziness.  A specialist is more likely to know the less likely causes.

I don't know what high insulin means.  Maybe someone else does, but I do know what happens to me when I have low blood sugar  Angry , and it's not pretty! Grin

You could try increasing your vitamin D by 100-500 units/week and see how far you can work up.  Or you might be able to try spending 20 minutes out in the sun each day.  My bone doctor put me on 5000/day, because mine was under 20, too.  It went up to 39, still low, but better.  I don't know if it's an absorption problem or what.

  Hope you feel better soon!

I was dizzy too and someone on this forum suggested that the fatigue I had might be from dysautonomia (dysfunctional autonomic nervous system).  I had the tilt-table test and I have neuro-cardiogenic syncope and now take amlodopine bensylate (calcium channel blocker / blood pressure med) and am no longer dizzy.

I too was thought to have anxiety but dysautonomia also can explain away what looks like anxiety.  Read up on this defect.  It's a real doozy.  I can barely stay awake.

The crystals Joan is talking about are tiny granules that are in everyone's ear, but they can become displaced and find themselves in the wrong part of the ear.  I had this a few years ago and it caused vertigo, usually when I changed positions, and typically when lying down for me. It can be treated by a physio (might need to be a particular type of PT, I was treated in Belgium so I dont know what the type of therapy translates to in English). I can't remember the name of this condition, but I think it has been discussed on the forum in the past. Maybe search for vertigo. I don't have time now but I will look it up later. This type of dizziness feels different to the low blood pressure head rush, which my son gets all the time when standing from sitting. It is more a sense of movement when you aren't, after you stop moving and the granules keep on moving around when and where they shouldn't.

Grr just typed a whole message and was ending it when my elbow hit a button and my puter deleted it!  OK one more try.

Hi Brigitte!!
Syncopy (dizziness) is a symptom of Masto and happens frequently with some people. I also have POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome) and that also is frequently seen with Masto. I would strongly suggest moving slowly when you change body positions--laying down to sitting to standing to walking. Give your body a chance to regulate your BP and this will happen less.

I have to say that I am on a calcium channel blocker for my BP and my syncope/POTS is better from it. I would also suggest you document this happening in your Masto Diary so you can see patterns and talk to your DR about this, too. Hope this helps!
hugs,
Ramona

Read this article, because it could solve your problem. My mother in law had a dizziness problem, and went to a specialist who explained the crystals in the ear problem. He told her that some simple exercises and body positioning would fix it, and IT DID!

NPR did a story on this several years ago. It describes this and gives a detailed account of the remedy. I have included the link at the top of my post. Smiley
