I finally did it!

I switched to the compounded version of Gastrocrom! Smiley  It comes in gelatin capsules, which I've been opening so I can stir the powder into water.  The cost is about 85% less than Gastrocrom.  I have to personally submit the claim to my insurance company and wait for reimbursement, but whatever... it is sooooo much cheaper.

I've also found that the taste is not as bad.  Has anyone else noticed this?  I wonder if the bad taste from Gastrocrom is really from the plastic tubes.  This is going to make travel so much easier!!! Grin

Do the instructions say to mix it with water or to swallow the capsule with water?  I'm checking to see if My insurance will pay for a powder.  It would be easier to carry on trips!

I talked about it with Dr. Greenberger last year and he indicated that the powder should still be mixed with water.  (I'm not sure why... this would be an interesting thing to research.)  I think my insurance will pay for it. The compounding pharmacy I used just doesn't work directly with my insurance company.

I have only taken the capsules dissolved in water, and thankfully have never noticed much of a taste Smiley. My understanding is that it's better to dissolve the powder so there is more even absorption.  I'm pretty sure I found something months ago that said that since the med works on your mast cells, it could actually cause degranulation when the capsule breaks open inside you because the mast cells would be impacted so strongly all at once.  I'm sure that others on here know better, though Smiley

It's just cromolyn sodium powder (generic... it's a pretty old drug), packaged in 100mg capsules.  You can get it from a compounding pharmacy.  I take two twice per day, which cost me $80 for a 30-day supply.  That includes the cost of sending it to my house by Fedex.

I get mine in the powder form from the compounding pharmacy out of Washington.  We had an insurance change.  I switched slowly and did fine, in fact I thing the powder works better for me.  Mine does not come in capsules. I just measure it out and dissolve it in warm water.  I use it 4 times a day, a months supply runs around $115

Thank you so much!! I am contacting Clarks as well as a local compounding pharmacy. I was so upset when I saw the changes - this is manageable now

I like Pam & quite a few others get in my case ketitofin or gastrocrom from Clark's in Washington. The girl can be abrupt, but Mark the pharmacist is fabulous. When I first got my script he waited on hold for my doc, whose very busy, for a 1/2hour just to get my quantity per month correct & I get mine in 3 days via the mail, once I email them. So I would recommend them highly.

Is there a difference in getting gastrocrom compounded into a powder capsule rather than the liquid viles?
I have the viles waiting for me at the pharmacy, but I am sooooo nervous to try it, and can't bring myself to pick it up!
If I knew I'd get some relief, I would have picked it up and drank it immediately, but it sounds like a scary drug to start, side effects etc.

Brigitte,
Cromolyn is fabulous!  Start slow and you will be fine...I have read that if you use one vial a day for a week and add a vile a week, that you wont have very many if any side affects!  It will take 8 weeks to get to the full dose.  I started mine much more aggressively!  The only difference to me between the liquid and the powder was the price!  Good luck!  Also when I get it compounded it does not come in capsules but a powder you mix in water.

Thanks Pam!!Winkso I picked up my cromolyn today and I'm sipping on it now! I can't believe it! I've wanted to try a mast cell stabilizer for 2 years now, and then once I got it, I was scared!
I was feeling pretty good today, so I figured it would be a good day to start. When I'm not feeling well, I have a lot of anxiety.
So I put 1/2 (even a little less) of a teaspoon in a 16 oz bottled water and I've been sipping it for awhile, I'm about 2/3 in. That's all I'm going to take today. I'll try another 1/2 teaspoon tomorrow morning and see how it goes.
I do feel a little woozy though. I think this is pretty typical?
Yikes! I hope these goes well. I'm such a scardy cat!

Good job!  Hang in there...remember it takes several months to get the full effect!  (4 months for me)  Glad you went and got it started!

Thanks again Pam! So I finished my 1/2 teaspoon about a half hour ago. I took like 2 hours to drink it! But now I feel a little woozy, and very disconnected, like a floaty I'm not really here feeling. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Will this go away?
Modify**** so this feeling is really weird, pretty disturbing, sigh Sad
I'm also having bad brain fog. I'm doubting everything that comes out of my mouth because I feel like it's wrong and I'm fighting to find the right words.
I know I must be so annoying on here with all my woes. I'm sorry. But this feeling I'm having is similar to the building up of the "panic attacks" I get when I'm around a wanted laundry detergent, room deodorizers etc. could the cromolyn actually be causing mast cell degranulation?
Modify modify***** now I feel really amped up and spun out. I don't think I'm going to be able to do this drug
***i won't modify anymore

Brigitte, take a deep breath and try to be calm.  I was recently put on an anxiety med by my specialist because he doesn''t think all my reactions are anaphylaxic in nature...I don't know if they are or not, but I do know that something is causing my throat to get tight....then I panic! So we are trying to figure out if anxiety is causing my mast cells to dump or if my mast cells are dumping and then the anxiety hits....Either way anxiety is causing me issues.  You told me that you have wanted to try this drug for 2 years and you were afraid of it, therefor you have a lot invested in getting this drug and being able to take it....you are stressing Hun!  The liquid viles are made up of a tiny bit of med and the rest is water, plus you are diluting it in several oz of water.  I don't think you are really getting enough of the med right now to cause that kind of reaction...I think it is more related to the feelings and stress that are causing you to trigger.  I am not a doctor so Im just giving my opinion.  Remember the med can only help you if you get it in you...so try to do some calming exercises today.  Try not to worry about the side affects...most of the side affects for me were flu like symptoms...but I was having them already.(I started at 4 vials a day and up it to 8 in less than a week).  Calm...Calm...Brigitte, you got this girl!   Wink
