Mouth Ulcers/Sores
02/05/12 at 07:50:13

I'm hoping someone here could possibly give me additional ideas as to what to do about mouth ulcers.
* I have not yet been officially diagnosed with MCAD by a Dr. (it's in process).
* I've had them for over a week, and the number is increasing (everywhere, including tongue).
* I've been using Listerine to help deaden the pain and clean them.
* They have responded to the Listerine treatment in the past and slowly receded, but this time they don't seem to be doing so.

Thanks,
Christi

Are they painful?

Is there a chance they could be herpetic?

How long have you had them? Have you noticed any triggers?

For the meantime what I would do, and you're probably already doing, is avoid acidic foods and eat bland things. I would think listerine would be quite harsh on open sores.

If they are herpetic, an antiviral might help shorten the course.

I think you should show them to a doc, maybe even a GI specialist if they are recurrent just to make sure they aren't any of the non masto things that can cause mouth ulcers like herpes or IBD, but they could be mast cell related, it's a process of elimination

It must be so painful. I really hope they go away soon

For mouth sores in people who are doing chemo, a soothing rinse mixes equal parts liquid Bendaryl with Maalox.

There's also a virus called coxsackie that causes mouth ulcers, but I don't know that it would be something recurring.

Christi, it could be a viral infection!   I just had a case of Coxsackievirus and OH MY GOODNESS WAS THAT PAINFUL!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

My mouth was absolutely FULL of sores and the pain was intense!  It would wake me up from a dead sleep and it left some scars too.

Donīt keep treating this, GO TO A DOCTOR and see what it is.   Masto does not do this, so you can just forget about that.   Itīs something else and likely a viral or bacterial infection and if thatīs so, then itīs going to trigger your masto, so GET ON IT!!   Go to the ER if necessary for you need to see this right away, please.

Thanks you guys.
In a brief moment with less pain and some clear concious thought I posted this; and did some additional research.

Then...
    1. I double checked my listerine for alchol - of course it has it and I switched to a non alcohol one.
    2. I upped my mouth cleaning routine. (I didn't have any liquid Malox or Benedryl to try - I'll have to remember that)
    3. If they weren't improving by today I'd be seeing a Dr.

AND ta da! they are getting better.
Why they didn't respond to my typical treatment this time I am not sure; but until next time I'll try this method and see it that stops working too.

    4. This is definitely on my list to chat with Dr.s about.
    5. If they do not continue their slow withdrawal I'll be going to a Dr.

Oh, and...
*Yes, they are recurring, thus not likely to be a virus as I understand it
    * Yes, they are painful
    * I've noted to myself that alot of my issues (like this) seem to be occuring more frequently and with more intensity.

Thank you all again!

HSV 1 (oral herpes virus) can be recurrent because you never can get rid of the virus.  I would see a doctor either way.  Acyclovir RX can prevent it if it is HSV type 1.  This info was given to me by my wife who is an RN.  I would go to the MD while they are still there....but they can do a blood test to tell you if you have hsv.  Hopefully you can get to the root of the problem so maybe you can prevent it from happening.

so glad they're getting better !!

I get raw patches when I eat foods that make me react and if I don't leave them alone they ulcerate

you'll probably sort it all out with time!
