Leaky, puffy eye update

It's a blocked tear duct according to my family doc.
Thanks all for your suggestions and help.

Great that it's not masto like mine, although my comes & goes, but when it comes it really hurts. What did he give you for it?

The way I see it, my family doc knows zilch about masto. But from what I heard on here, if it were masto related I would have it in both eyes and I only have it in one. He gave me drops to try for about 4 days and if that doesn't work he will send me to an eye specialist. NOW if they do some kind of test and find my tear duct to be fine....THEN I will chaulk it up to a mast cell issue. One step at a time though. I'll let you know as I go along. Do you have this in BOTH eyes?

Kim, I have mast cells in my left eye only. I do have time periods when both eyes are irritated but my Pataday drops pretty much stop that.  My eye DR found the mast cells in my left eye and also a "cluster" of mast cells. Its funny, she says my eyesight is very good no (diabetic) damage but I can tell you that my eyesight is horrible==changing fast, just not obvious on the tests she does.... and Ive found NIH research on the web that confirms mast cells can affect eyesight with little or no outside visible damage. Id go to an eye DR to make sure.

I am keeping an open mind about this. I don't want to get into a pattern of thinking EVERYTHING is a mast cell problem with me without first looking into or following what doctors think could be going on first. I am keeping the possibility in my mind that this could be mast cell. My family doc gave me eye drops (Bausch & Lomb- Opcon-A eye allergy relief) but I used it as prescribed yesterday and this morning my eye is now blood red, groteskly swollen, was sealed shut when i woke this morning and still running wet. I'm not so sure I should continue these drops over the weekend! I took a picture to show him, I think I'll stop the drops and go back in on Monday for him to send me to an eye doc.
I've had a slight upper eye lid swelling on this eye for almost a year but had no other symptoms until two weeks ago.
Time will tell I suppose. At least it doesn't HURT! just frustrating.

Im so sorry hon... sounds like youre sensitive to the eye drops for allergies.. Use cold compresses on it (lightly)  and nothing else until you can see a DR ok?? Sometimes I will use a very small amount of vasoline on the edges of my eye and/or lashes to keep them from crusting up--thats up to you if you think it would help you (not in the eye--on the outside only) its a trick medical people use when someone is going into surgery so they dont wake up with crusty eyes.....also, Sleep with your head elevated or it will cause your eye to swell shut again. Hope youre better soon!

Ramona, I attempted your advice....sort of:) I couldn't find Vaseline in the house last night. You're gonna kill me for this! I found Carmex. Wait, hear me out:) I did not apply it too close to my eye. It didn't irritate my eye and my eye wasn't sealed shut this morning! Just a small amount of crusting so it worked. I know it wasn't the best choice. I wasn't able to prop my self while sleeping . I have several bad disks in neck and it became too painful so I still had major swelling this morning. But I wanted to thank you for your helpful advice.  It's been over 24 hours since I used the eye drops and still the whites of my eye is blood red and hubby says I look demon possed....lol. I told him not to anger me or he might find out how much demon is really there!!! J/k
Hope you have a good day!

Ramona,

How do you find out if you have mast cells in your eyes?  Does an eye doc check for that?  And how?

Thanks,
Kate

You know what was weird about this is,.. Ive had a growth on my left eye for many years and no-one ever knew what it was.. just a slightly yellow, lumpy nonsymmetric growth. The eye Dr always said, if it isnt hurting me, lets not worry about it. About the same time I became symptomatic for masto, that growth just disappeared.

Kate----Yes, I went to an eye DR mainly because I am diabetic and have to watch my eyesight closely--plus I needed new reading glasses. The eye DR found them by looking at my eyes in 2 different high powered digital machines--Im not sure what they are called but they looked impressive to me. Shes writing a paper on what she finds with my eyes..

Kim-----How is your eye now?? Will you be seeing your DR Monday?? Let me know how youre doing Smiley

Ramona-I'm going to call my dr this morning as soon as they open to try to get an appt. He may just send me to eye dr but I will let you know later today. This morning I woke with about the same degree of swelling, perhaps just a tad less, and the redness of the eye ball itself is also just a tad less. It sure is taking a long time to clear up considering it's been over 48 hours since I stopped using those eye drops.
You know, I had this very same reaction to the pill form of Levaquin a couple years ago only it affected both eyes. I was curious last night about any shared ingredients between the Levaquin and these eye drops so I look it up on the Internet. The only shared ingredient I could find was hypromellose. Not sure if this ingredient is the sneaky culprit to my reactions or not. I just was amazed to find a shared ingredient in both.
Well time to call doc. Ttyl.

Kim Im thinking you need some type of eye drops with cortisone in it to reduce all that inflammation. I hope they prescribe it for you--maybe go to the ER if they dont?? If you can, buy one of those eye covers filled with fluid that you can throw in the freezer--they feel so good. Do you have a recliner you can sleep in until the swelling goes away?? That might be more comfortable for you. Hope youre doing better!

Waiting now for call from eye specialist. My dr wants me to see one today. Specialist is trying to fit me in on emergency basis. I read online that sometimes cromylin is prescribed which is used for controlling mast cells. I plan to ask about both.

Kim go to the ER, they will treat it immediately and they can call a specialist in to see you while you are there.. you can still keep your appt Friday (IF you need it)  I dont like the idea that you could possibly have damage occuring while waiting.. DONT wait. Call that eye DR back, explain it is an emergency and go straight to an ER if he wont see you today. Good luck Hon, let us know what happens!!

Your concern is touching. My redness got lighter today. Swelling was still up this morning. I really can't take off for the ER. Hubby is out of town and I am sole care taker of 21 yr old son recovering from open heart surgery. It was only 11 days ago and he tires very easily. I will have to wait for my appt.
