NY Times article on immune system affects on the brain
10/13/14 at 05:02:13

I wanted to point out this interesting article from yesterday's New York Times on the links between an immune response to gluten and a whole range of disorders with neurological affects:

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/12/opinion/sunday/can-celiac-disease-affect-the-b...

Mayo Clinic in Minnesota is doing a lot of research in this area, evidently.

Since I experience a lot of mood symptoms with my MCAS and my brother has schizophrenia, I am especially interested in following this research and potentially getting my brother in to see someone there.  I thought others here might be interested in the immune connections, too.

Its good to hear that the neurological effects of these conditions are being taken more seriously. Out of all the MCAS symptoms, for me, by far the worst is the cognitive impairment and mood/neurological issues. Unlike the other symptoms, the neurological are incredibly challenging to cope with, as your ability to cope is largely dependent on your ability to think and reason, which itself is impacted.

I doubt the immediate symptoms are due to antibodies against the brain. It seems, at least in my case, its more likely an excess of adrenaline or some other neurotransmitter(s).

My case seems incredibly similar to yours. I have MCAS, with many neurological symptoms. I also have an older brother with adult-onset schizophrenia. So maybe there is something to this.

Also of interest, Dr theoharides, a mast cell specialist, has been researching the link between Mast-cell activation and Autism. He has published many research papers on this subject. He also formulated his own mast-cell stabilizer, and has reported seeing improvements in some autistic patients, with its use.

Larken, I've seen that article about celiac affecting the brain but I still haven't read it yet due to mental fatigue. I've read another one on this topic before though. I'm glad awareness of it is spreading.

And very nicely put stri8ted. Brain fog is by far my worst symptom too, and causes me to make a lot more mistakes or forget to take precautions so that I'm exposed to my triggers far more often. For example setting my cook timer wrong and burning my food.
