Anyone Taking Two Singulair's a Day?
10/13/14 at 02:44:33

My new Florida allergy doctor seemed averse to allowing me to take 2 Singulairs per day because of something to do with "there is no testing to see if there would be an adverse effect on the liver".

Yet, Dr. Afrin had recommended me trying that option, and I had been too scared at the time because I knew the medication affected my dreams (making them seem more real), and that the medication gave me insomnia.

Yet, after all the recent problems of mine, I tried two pills per day, one in the morning and one at night, and my stuffy nose vanished for good.

Then this recent allergist's comment about possible effects to my liver scared me and I stopped taking the morning dose.  Apparently, one pill a day is not as effective for me.

So, I wanted your opinions if you are taking Singulair two times per day.  How long have you been doing that?  Does anyone check your liver for you because of your dosing schedule? How are you doing on the two pills per day?

Thanks in advance.

HI Futurehope,

I have only taken singular twice a day for very short periods, just a few days to a week at a time. I didn't have any problem with it, but neither did I get the relief I was hoping for, so I stopped the twice a day dosing.

Have you asked your doctor whether doing a regular comprehensive metabolic panel or a simple liver enzyme level test at regular intervals would be enough to keep an eye on your liver?

Hi Futurehope,

Dr. Afrin told me to take it twice a day as well.  I know Heather (forum leader) has taken at least 30mg of Singulair a day regularly and it helped her a lot.  Maybe you could message her to ask how long she took those doses?  I asked Dr. Afrin about the large doses of meds and he was not worried at all.  Good luck to you!  Sarah

Thanks, Sarahkay111....I was sure Dr. Afrin suggested it and I guess he suggested it for you too.

I cannot ask "Heather" of her experiences because I did a search for "Heather" under the member search, and did not find her?  I must be doing something wrong?

My specialist told me the same thing about not taking it twice a day.  She said that the risk of side effects on the liver outweigh the benefit of taking it twice a day.  She also said there were no studies yet on taking twice.  She did promise me when there were studies done and proved that it worked she would let me take it twice a day.  So even though there are many taking it twice a day, I am try to be patient.

A number of years ago Dr Akim mentioned to me that there was a small indication that some people develop vascular disease from longterm Singulair. I don't know if that was just a study or if it has become more prevalent now in patients.

I only take 10 mg Singulair per day as needed. I know that some kids have experienced mood swings from it as well.
