Calcium & Vitamin A = Triggers: what the hell am I supposed to eat? Here's my story
11/25/13 at 10:18:57

I joined this site a while ago and introduced myself at the time. But recently I wrote down all of my symptoms into a more detailed story.

It's intended for my doctors, but I thought I would upload it here for anyone who would like to read it. Maybe it will help you identify your triggers, or maybe someone who reads it will be able to offer me some help.

Enjoy

It looks like attachments are not working on the forums at the moment. Here is a link where you can view it online with google drive https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NSt8HoOmMJD35k-vJFOrLTiZUAS5IwcgTGsOHEtgNso/...

Hi Nick--I can try to help a little, but you seem to know a lot of the things that bother you.  I never eat out, so even if it's embarrassing, I tell people I can't eat it, and just tell them I have allergies, or I just tell them I already ate.  But I understand not wanting to tell everyone what's going on.  It gets tiring, and weird if you don't know people well.  I thought about your list of trigger foods, and I'm wondering about it being the calcium or vitamin A?  Fish, eggs, tomato, fish oil, and walnuts have histamine in them--I can have some walnuts, but no fish. I can eat bananas, green beans, and potatoes, but am working on the nutrition thing myself, so I'm not sure how to help you with that.  Vitamin supplements bother me too.  With toothpaste, do you rinse your mouth out with water a few times when you're done?  I know mast cells can cause mucous secretion--maybe that's what's happening with your nose and bowel movements?  My patients at the hospital get the mucous bowel movements sometimes, and they smell bleachy.  Maybe those are the areas you have a lot of mast cells? A lot of people say water helps, including me, and I think it helps get rid of all the toxic crap we have floating around from our mast cells!  That could be why the exercise helps you--it uses up some of the histamine in our bodies.  Showers always help me for some reason too.  Cold is worse than heat for me.  These are just a few of my thoughts.  I don't know where you live, but the doctor at Mayo (Jonathon Smith I think--it's under the doctor thread)--he's a neurologist and he's very interested in the neurological symptoms that mast cells cause.  I e-mailed him, and he e-mailed me back the same night.  You could try asking him a few questions.  Hope you feel good Smiley  Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Thankyou for the reply.

In terms of calcium vs histamines I really don't know. All I can say is that calcium triggers are very specific and I could tell you if you gave me something that contained calcium just by eating or drinking it.

I'd be irritable and nasty afterwards though  Grin

It's actually everything containing calcium. I worried that I was calcium defficient so I tried everything possible that contains calcium:
+ cheese
+ calcium supps (oxide, malate, citrate?)
+ tahini
+ calcium-fortified soya milk
+ new potatoes

I live in London in the Uk. We have a public health service the NHS who have been unable to understand my problems in the last 7 years (apart from the immunologist who gave me the mast cell diet).

So I emailed a few of the mast cell specialists in London who offer private consultations yesterday. Just waiting for their reply now.

Thanks again

Have you tried kale or other greens (but not spinach)?  If you want to give it a try, simmer it in lots of salted water with the lid off the pot in order to dissipate much of the oxalic acid in the greens.  When they are tender, put them in ice water to stop the cooking and to retain the color.  I mix mine with olive oil, s & p, and some garlic.  Good on toast.  I am able to eat  mustard and collard greens, as well as endive, bok choy, cabbage, and more.  Of course, we're all different, and one or more of those could be a problem for you.  Tofu is good source of calcium if you can tolerate it.

As always, try a very small amount first.  I've started something new with foods that I'm not sure I can tolerate.  Lately, I take a small amount (1 tsp. or less) and put it in the blender with a large amount of water (1 pt. or more), then sip the water over an hour or two, beginning with just a teaspoon.  If I don't react within 15-30 minutes, I'll try some more.  Sometimes sneaking it in under the radar works.  I usually wait 2 days to try it again in slightly larger amounts.

I haven't yet read all your symptoms, but I'm wondering if probiotics would be helpful.  There are dairy-free types.

You might want to consult a nutritionist about how to have a balanced diet with your restrictions.

Some foods trigger IgE responses (true allergies).  Others contain histamine in varying amounts.  And still others trigger direct histamine release in the body.

A mixture of baking soda and salt can be used to brush your teeth if you're reacting to toothpaste.  Have you tried a fluoride-free type?  My daughter reacts to fluoride in toothpaste.

I'll try to read your link and if I have anything to add, I'll write again later.

Hello Joan,

Thanks for taking the time to reply and no worries you haven't read all of the document. when my symptoms are even mildly bad I wouldn't even be able to read half of it.

I've noticed the calcium effects even when I try a decent size dose of broccolli. I'm reluctant to try anything that contains calcium, although I drink mineral water which has trace amounts and seems to be fine; so there is some threshold.

Your suggestion is pretty clever about diluting tiny amounts in water. For myself, sometimes it can take a few days to realise that something I have eaten is contributing to me feeling not great.

I would be in a better position to try things out if I could just stick to my diet and get back to a comfortable base level. But something always messes me up just as I'm getting there.

Cheesy
