Generic Gastrocrom
04/21/13 at 11:24:29

Hello,

I got new health insurance and filled my script for Gastrcrom.  However, they substituted a generic for it from Prasco Laboratories in Mason, Ohio.

I have never tried this before, has anyone else?  I was not aware that there was another company in the US that manufactured Cromolyn Sodium.  It looks the same as Gastrcrom, same ampules and everything.

Anybody using this and what was your experience?  I am a little scared to try new meds so wondering if anyone else has taken it?

Thanks so much!

Whoa... that's interesting news.  I had no idea there was a generic version of the plastic ampules.  Did the patent run out recently?

I have tried the generic form and didn't have any problem at all. And i recently switched to a powder form of Sodium Cromolyn that I get from Clark's pharmacy.  It needs to be dissolved in a small amount of heated water before you are able to drink it.  So it is not as convenient as the ampules of Gastrocrom BUT it is only $110 per month.  I was paying $1000 a month for my Gastrocrom!  I didn't have any problems at all switching to the powder form.  Smiley

All good to know.   I'm going to try going with Clark's soon.

Ditto on the powdered cromolyn sodium.  I've been using it since last year and it's working great.  In fact, I find the powder more convenient than the liquid... it's MUCH smaller to carry and I don't have to go through the special "medical" line at the airport!  AND it saves hundreds of dollars per month.  My allergist was excited and wrote down the information to share with his other patients Smiley
