GI Discomfort
05/29/12 at 05:38:04

Just wondering how many of you have periodic gi discomfort that comes and goes?

I have had complete gi workups, and I really don't have much mast cell infiltration to speak of.

However, every once and awhile, it seems like my whole abdomen gets bloated, distended, painful, and then after a week or so subsides.  I sometimes get nausea with this and some pain.

We have had a week of bizarre weather here, up and down with temperature changes.  We do not have air conditioning.  All of these changes seem to hit me in the gi first.  I have increased my ranitidine, etc.

Just wondering if anyone else has these bouts of abdominal discomfort? Undecided

Heat triggers my GI pain pretty quickly.  Can you invest in a small window air condioner?  Have you been on Ketotifen for gi pain? Works good for tummy pain.

I have periodic GI issues just like you describe.  Sometimes it's searing pain.  Most of the time it's something I ate, but stress (even heat or extreme weather changes) can trigger me, too.  Have you been checked for other things besides mast cells that can cause those symptoms, like gall bladder or bile duct problems?  Do you think there's a food that might be a new trigger?

Simethicone helps me as does increasing both H1 and H2 antihistamines.  Benadryl liquid is really helpful for me.  I also use Tums and/or Pepto-Bismol sometimes, but Pepto is full of artificial colors and contains salicylates, so not for everyone.

When my stomach flares, I revert to my basic safe diet, which is rice or rice noodles, homemade, fat free broth, and winter squash or sweet potatoes.  I stay on that until the symptoms get better, then add easily digestible foods back in over a few days.  Bromelain has helped me, too (digestive enzyme).  Since I've been taking probiotics, those flares seem to be fewer.

I'm about to start on Dr. Theoharides formula, NeuroProtek.  I'm hopeful that will help, too.
