The Truth about Margarine and Oils

Did you know that if you leave a tub of margarine outside to melt and you came back in a couple of days you will find that flies or other pests will not go near it? It will not rot or smell any different. This alone should be a cause of concern. Why is this?

Margarine is a 100% man made product – it is not a food and what’s more there is nothing in margarine which resembles food at all. But the most concerning thing about margarine is the potential dangers to your health. It has been found that margarine may increase heart issues and is it any wonder when you consider that margarine shares 27 paint ingredients and is one molecule away from plastic.

Aside from the toxic chemicals a critical thing to be aware of in all margarines is Trans Fats. Trans Fats that are used for margarine and cooking oils are formed during a hydrogenation process. Therefore it is essential to ensure that you refrain from using margarine which always contains this oil. Many oils which state the word “hydrogenated” on the label should be avoided. According to a study by Dr Walter Willett, chairman of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, approximately 30,000 premature heart disease deaths each year can be attributed to the consumption of Trans Fats.

Trans Fats are formed when vegetable oil used in margarine is heated to a very high temperature thus causing rancidity. After this, many other frightening additives follow in the goal of making this grey smelly glug look creamy, tasty, inviting and easy spreading. But it really is nothing other than pure gunk with stuff such as – deodorants and colourants (to mask the disgusting smell), nickel, hydrogen atoms, just to name a few.

Trans fats or hydrogenated oils can be found in other products such as peanut butter and many cooking oils. Again, please check your labels.

The alternative is to use only 100% organic butter with no other additives. Butter has been found in studies to prevent many diseases such as arthritis, cancer, osteoporosis and heart disease. Butter contains many vitamins and minerals good for your health and tastes much better. But the best butter of all is 'raw' organic butter which has many other benefits such as glycospingolipids that can help prevent gastrointestinal infections. If you can source organic raw full cream milk or butter you will also reap the benefits of selenium and iodine which is vitally important to the health of the thyroid and brain.

For your oils use organic, unrefined and virgin oils – they have many health benefits and refrain from anything which has the words, hydrogenated and refined. Some very healthy oils which can take high heat without turning into Trans Fats are: Peanut Oil, Avocado Oil, Sunflower Oil, Grape seed Oil and Safflower Oils. Coconut Oil, Sesame Oil and Olive Oil are best consumed in their raw form and are very heart healthy.

How to make your own butter: (Only takes 10 min. Use coconut only)

Heavy Cream, blend with mixer. First it gets to whip cream stage, then turns to a buttermilk texture, then it will release all the milk fat liquid. When this happens and you will know it has happened, pour the liquid out and beat the butter a little more if possible to make sure all the liquid is out. I then squeeze the butter ball to make sure all of it is out. (the milk fat is what makes your butter turn bad faster). If you want to add a pinch of sea salt to your butter do it at the beginning. I have done it both ways and it is excellent. It is so very good!
