Lately I have been having vision changes when I have a bad attack. I look in the mirror and I can't see myself clearly (maybe a good thing lol), but its scarey my vision changes and my eyes get dilated. I usually only notice this when I have a bad attack but lately its happening more and more, I went too the eye Dr. and he dilated my eyes and wow that medication made me sick for days whatever it is they put in your eyes too dilate them I am not going to let him do that again but he did not see any problems with my eyes just wondering if its a mast cell thing or not thanks in advnace

New here but already 3rd post today because as I continue to read, I CONTINUE to Relate! I too have had vision changes during flares....although not yet diagnosed with masto, yet given the meds like gastrocrohm I did NOT use and recently threw away due to expiration....stupid thing I did, will try and get whatever tests now because the more I read the more I am hoping THIS time this will be something they can relate Everything else to, anyway as far as the eye problems. I have always had perfect vision, even after 50, until about 3 to 4 years ago, then I had noticed that when I felt bad my vision and clarity would change, and then go back, now it just gets worse but doesn't ever go back as good as it was...20-20, they used to say I had Eagle Vision! No more though. Also when they dialate My eyes, I get the same Reaction! They Hurt SO bad and I look like an Alien, and it takes DAYS for them to go back down...this can't be right? Yet whenever I've complained about this happening they ignore me...haven't been in a while, when I go back I'm going to mention it....again. Thanks for reminding me...Debbie Ciolli

My vision fluctuates daily. It is very frustrating. The meds i am on dont seem to help the vision/focus issues. I wonder if anyone has had any success with something that helps.

I just wanted to note here that the eyes are full of Mast cells. I have had a lot of issues with my vision. I think this may have lead to my Wet macular degeneration before my diagnosis. When I saw my specialist at Mass Eye and Ear in Boston this past winter for my yearly checkup his assistant told me she was doing research with mice and the stabilizing effect of cromolyn sodium on the mast cells in the eyes!! I know I may sound like a broken record in my posts but I can not stress enough what a difference the Low Histamine diet has had including stabilizing my vision. Of course staying on top of medications, keeping the stress low (yeah right Cheesy) and doing my best to avoid those triggers! I have also started to try the rotation diet noted in another post and this has been great! I thought my diet may be getting even more limited but I think this is change is working.
This doesn't mean that I still don't have focus issues but I have not had another ocular migraine since my diet change (I went 3/4 blind while at work for an hour - with no pain, so I was a bit panicked with what was happening  Shocked!) You need to try and keep those histamine levels as low as possible. I hope this helps.

Great info Eag! I am also going to an eye DR who is studying Masto and its effects on eyes. I also have problems with my eyes--even though each test is pretty much normal.

My eye DR did find a cluster of mast cells in my left eye and a few single ones floating around. They found that I have a thicker than normal cornea and dry eye and dry mouth. I also have Sjogrens Syndrome and it seems to be common to have it with masto, frequently.  I am on Restasis drops for dry eyes twice a day, also on Ketotifen eye drops, sodium cromulate eye drops 2% and pataday eye drops. Most of these are mast cell stabilizers and they do seem to be helping my eyesight. I protect my eyes from the sun, too.

Those of you with masto or a mast cell problem, make sure your eye DR does the more in depth digital eye exam (Optoman). Hope this info helps!

Can you give any more detail on the Optoman eye testing?  I don't know if it was done on me or not.

Its pretty cool really.. its a big digital machine that sees right into your eye and takes pictures of what it sees. You put your chin on this level area and you can see into the machine (computer pulsing) while it is looking into your eyes.
