Title: Normal Respiratory Rate
Post by Terry on 02/11/14 at 02:18:10

Heart rate and blood pressure swings are commonly noted with mast cell disorder symptoms but what about normal breath rate?  Most sources indicate that the typical healthy adult should have a resting breath rate of 12 to 15 breaths per minute.  Mine is consistently about twice that even without an activation flare up.  I have had my pulmonary function thoroughly checked and there is no indication of any abnormality.  I have never smoked and have no diseases that are not mast cell related.  Is an elevated resting respiratory rate common with us?

Hi Terry--I'm not sure about the answer, but normal respirations are from 12-24 per minute, so you are probably "normal."  If you are having shortness of breath with rapid breathing, fluid in your lungs, or wheezing, I would go see your doctor again.  If you are not short of breath, it might just be your normal.  Hope you're feeling good!  Sarah
