Title: Azithromycin Post by Avonlea on 01/08/13 at 01:19:57 Hello everyone? Has anyone successfully taken Azithromycin (Zithromax)? I was on a trip over New Year's, came back and tested positive for Strep throat. :P Since I've reacted to Keflex before, they prescribed Azithromycin. Its powerful and looks like it has red dyes in it. I'd be surprised if I don't react to it, so I'm working myself up over the thought of putting the pill in my system. Ironically, I took zinc last night and the throat feels better today, without antibiotics. Any input is much appreciated! |
Title: Re: Azithromycin Post by Starflower on 01/08/13 at 03:37:42 I took a "z" pack in November for some kind of sinus/lung infection. It didn't bother me, but it also didn't help :( I had to take something even stronger (augmentin) a week later. I'm pretty tolerant of most medications though :-/ I think you're right to be cautious... it would be a good idea to take the first couple of doses when someone else is around to make sure you're doing OK. Title: Re: Azithromycin Post by Avonlea on 01/08/13 at 13:35:54 Thanks, Heather. I took the z-pack years ago for pneumonia & it worked well. That was before all the mast cell issues, of course). If it didn't work for you that must've been some infection you had! I have a call in to Brigham and Women's for some pre-medication guidance. Whitney |
Title: Re: Azithromycin Post by Joan on 01/08/13 at 15:11:28 I also am fine with Azithromycin. However, I had severe anaphylaxis from Avelox (in the same group with Cipro, Levaquin, and other fluoroquinolone antibiotics). They're known to cause direct histamine release. Had the same problem with doxycycline. |
Title: Re: Azithromycin Post by Avonlea on 01/09/13 at 09:02:30 Thanks, Joan. You are such a good source of information. I heard from Dr. Lee of Dr. Castells' office, who said that Azithromycin is usually well tolerated by the mast cell patients. She asked me to report back how I do. Whitney |
