Title: Nashville, TN Dr Found!
Post by kimtg68 on 04/07/12 at 12:44:41

I found a knowledable Mast Cell doctor at Vanderbilt in Nashville TN. His name is Dr John Fahrenholz and he knows mast cell disease. He is a part of the Allergy, Asthma Department. I've only seen him once and I plan to return to him.

Hi Kim,

If you don't mind me asking will you see him as your "local" MC doctor or as your "remote" mast cell specialist?  (Like Dr. Afrin.)

Just wondering, as I try figure all the doctor stuff myself!

I am so happy you found someone you want to see again. Was he nice and sincere?

I’m not sure yet if I’m going to see him as my primary doctor for the mast cell stuff. But I do know this: my current local doctor referred me to him so perhaps he will begin consulting with him. Not sure. If he plans to do so then I might stay with this local guy. However, my concern is that he won’t consult the Vanderbilt doctor when needed and continue to try to ‘wing it’ like he’s been doing so far. If that is the case I will not continue with my local doctor. Since I’ve only seen the Vanderbilt doctor once, I feel I need to get a few more appointments and interactions with him to make this decision. Just from the first appt I had with him I can say that he is NICE and SINCERE and absolutely KNOWS mast cell disorders AND other disorders that often accompany mast cell disorders. He treats several patients with mast cello disorders so he has experience with treatments. I’m quite hopeful! I will keep you informed and perhaps someone that can travel to Nashville will be interested in seeing him. Oh and let me add that I do not think I will need to travel back to see Dr. Afrin. I do respect his knowledge and I want to continue to correspond with him via email when necessary. That’s my thoughts at this time.
Kim

I'm sorry I do not know if he see's children. Your friend could google him and get his email contact to send an email to inquire.  I hope yes for your friends sake. If not, perhaps he could recommend someone in the area that does.
Hope they find someone.

Hey mommy, if you find out that he does see children or if he recommends someone that does, would you mind posting that in a new thread under this 'Doctors' section. I am sure others would like that information.

It's been some time now since I updated my thoughts on the doctor I see in Nashville. This is my advice and thoughts; he is much more knowledgable about mast cell disorders then ANY local doctor I have seen or attempted to communicate with. He isn't UP THERE, so to speak, with the likes of Afrin, Akins, Castells or the well known researchers. But if I bring to him documented research or correspondence from Afrin he accepts it, reads it and open mindedly discusses things with me. I'm happy to have found him and look forward to working WITH him in deciding what is best for my health.

I live in Huntsville, Alabama and have been told that I need to see Dr. Phil Lieberman in Memphis, TN.  Has anyone seen him for mast cell disorders?  His name is listed on several of the consensus papers along with Dr. Castells.

My local allergist will refer me to him next month.  The allergist has been treating me with Allegra 180 mg, Zantac 150 mg, Singulair 10 mg in the morning.  I take Zyrtec 10 mg and Zantac 150 mg in the evening.

Dr. Lieberman is listed online as an Anaphylaxis specialist.  Memphis is about 4 hours from my home, but I will travel as far as necessary to be evaluated by a specialist.

I also live near Huntsville.

Are you are looking for someone to diagnose you? Or just someone to treat you? I'm sorry I am not familiar with the doctor in Memphis that you mentioned. I was diagnosed by Dr Afrin in South Carolina. My somewhat local doctor that treats me is Dr John Fahrenholz at the Vanderbilt Allergy Clinic in Nashville.

I am being treated by Dr. Heather James (Huntsville, AL allergist) for probable MCAS but she wants me to see Dr. Phil Lieberman in Memphis.  I will see her again tomorrow and hope to learn if I need to see him to get a definite diagnosis or further testing.  Dr. Lieberman has written many papers on Idiopathic Anaphylaxis and is listed on some of the MCAS papers along with Dr. Castells.

I hope that she can manage my care from Huntsville.  I do not travel well due to lifelong motion sickness which has been diagnosed as Meniere's Disease in the past.  I am now wondering how much my IBS, dizziness, GERD has always been due to MCAS.

Albymom, how are things going? Did you end up going to Memphis? I would love to hear how you are doing.
