Title: Mast Cell Doctor in Augusta Georgia
Post by GodIsLove on 03/14/12 at 17:21:15

After months of searching for a Mast Cell Doctor in GA or anywhere near me I have finally found one right in my back door here in Augusta, GA.
His name is Dr. Farrukh T. Awan,Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of GA. He is located in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit Division of Hematology/Oncology. Phone#706-721-1751,Fax 706-721-9352. I am so thankful to have found him and he as told me that he will never give up on me as so many of my other doctors have done.  He is doing a bone marrow biopsy on me next week. He is also trying to get me in the clinical trial for the drug Midostaurin. He the other patients in the trial are doing much better on this drug. I am praying daily that this will be the answer for me. Dr. Awan stated that he would be glad to see patients who could not find a mast cell doctor near their home.
Have a blessed day
Rosemary

So glad you found a doctor!

My understanding is that Midostaurin is still in clinical trials and the criteria for admission are pretty strict.  For SM patients, it has to be ASM, unless something's changed.

I hope you don't have aggressive SM, and that this doctor will be able to get you stabilized and feeling better with other meds.  The BMB should give him a lot of information.  If you don't have the gene defect, Gleevec is a possibility for treatment, and others are doing pretty well on that.  Is he planning on pre-medicating you for the test with the REMA protocol?

Regardless, hope you start feeling better!  So glad this doctor is available for southeastern people!

Hello Rosemary,

How are you feeling? I am looking for a mast cell specialist in Georgia. I have been diagnosed with MCAS, but no other extensive testing genetic or otherwise has been done. I am receiving Xolair shots and taking the z/z combo and Ketotefin.

I see that you visited Dr. Awan a while back. Are you still seeing him? His name came up along with Theordore Lee, Lugman Seidu, and Elliot Winton. Winton is not covered by my insurance, but Awan, Lee, and Seidu are.

Would you know if any of these three doctors are pro-active (not just maintenance doctors)?

Thank you in advance for any additional info.
