Title: Curry powder
Post by Anaphylaxing on 01/29/12 at 13:14:24

Sorry I'm posting so much in triggers I guess it's where I'm at

My husband tried to use a tiny amount for dip and kept away from me I kept my distance. I didn't really notice it. But after supper (sweet potato and burger) I had tongue tingling, then later noticed the curry smell, then got a hive on my hand and throat swelling (haven't had those since my original reaction 8 months ago)

So took atarax and headed to ER parkade.

Took another atarax, by 2 AM the throat swelling stopped so I went home and went to bed. I feel all twitchy today and will likely take an atarax before supper

part of me stresses that the med triggers me too. .. .

:-/

I'm sure this is really frustrating!  What did they do for you at the ER?

Sorry for not clarifying Joan

I sat in the ER parkade with my husband and drugs :). thankfully at 2 am my throat swelling eased

I'm semi allergic to the car so had to pace the parkade

I won't go into the ER unless I'm getting low BP, have used IM epi, or can't breathe. This is probably not good advice for most but I've just had so many bad experiences in the ER and get triggered by all of the stuff there, so want to be sure I need it

But when I feel airway closing symptoms, then I know I should be closeby to the ER

I was watching a cooking show on the Food Network and they were at a moroccan restaurant and I saw all the spices they use and realized they were all safe spices for us. Well most of us. Things like, onion, garlic, saffron, cumin, turmeric. The recipes they made didn't have cinnamon,or nutmeg. I'm going to have to look into moroccan food. I actually started salivating while watching it. They slow roasted a lamb and the meat just fell apart. My husband and I squealed when we saw that. Where were laughing.

Oooh Missy;
Be Careful ! Onion, & Garlic are both possible triggers. Cumin & Curry-I dont remember ever seeing mentioned, but they too are pretty potent. I use very little onion/garlic/cumin, when cooking. Its funny-I can eat some restaraunt's Mexican dishes, yet others bring out the "alien" in my gut! Curry has been studied & I'm told is good for brainpower. I'd eat TONS if I could ! :D

I had definite reactions to garlic and curry.

I've been avoiding onions

Curry powders are often different blends of multiple spices.  They probably all have turmeric in them, but from there, check labels.  You can mix your own, too, and leave out whatever ingredient you think triggers you.

Garlic and onions will put me in the ER! Even the smell will trigger me, so those ingredients are banned from my home.  :)

same for me right now Deborah, I don't know if it will improve or not as anything strong smelling sets me off these days

Title: Smell Sensitivity
Post by Joan on 02/11/12 at 07:54:08

I saw something online, without any detail, that said low D metabolites can cause smell sensitivity.  Does anybody have any thoughts on that?

I'll pop more of my Vitamin D in case :)

I read somewhere that elimination diets can worsen scent sensitivity...not a reputable journal or anything just and elimination diet site but was interesting

whatever it is I hope it stops soon :)
