Title: How to get an appointment at the Center of Excellence for Masto in Boston: Dr. Akin and Dr. Castells

Here is the official information regarding getting appointments with Dr. Akin and Dr. Castells in Boston at the Center of Excellence for Mastocytosis:

How to get an appointment:
The patient's physician should write a letter of referral for consideration. The doctors have decided not to accept patients who are self-referrals. Therefore the patients should obtain a referral letter from their physicians explaining why the diagnosis of mast cell disease is suspected. After reviewing the letter, Dr. Akin or Dr. Castells will get back to the physician writing the referral letter.

Which doctor sees Masto patients and which sees Mast Cell Activation?
Both doctors see patients with confirmed or highly suspected diagnosis of cutaneous or systemic mastocytosis.

Dr. Akin now forcuses on patients with Mastocytosis, while Dr. Castells sees both Mastocytosis and Mast Cell Activation patients.

It has been reported to us that a patient called Dr. Akin's office, told them he had a diagnosis of either IA or SM, and he was given an appointment! This is great news. Doesn't hurt to try. I am sure that sharing with the receptionist the diagnosis of IA or SM was the reason for success.

The Allergy and Immunology Department, where Dr. Akin and Dr. Castells see patients, now has a form that can be completed by a doctor or patient in order to get an appointment to see one of their mast cell specialists.  It asks for information and documentation that the patient has a mast cell disorder.

The reason for this form is that there have been too many patients who traveled long distances to see them and then were found not to have mastocytosis or other mast cell disorders.
