Title: I guess Emergency Management is out, huh?
Post by MastoGem on 09/30/11 at 08:23:02

My mind and heart want to do one thing and my body disagrees.

I HATE desk jobs!!!  I want to do something interesting and dynamic.  But my body wants boring work sitting in a chair.

I have a masters in public health with experience managing a shelter during a hurricane.  Without mast cell issues my first and best choice for BOTH my interests, income AND job openings would be Emergency Management.

Before you react it is a bit of a misnomer.  The positions involve more "Emergency Planning".  And I'd be so good at it!  I'd love to help people in this way. It is soooo tempting.  Obviously I am considering others too.  Although I've only had a go-to-the-hospital tongue swelling thing ONCE years ago, I get that that wouldn't be an ideal reaction during a crisis.

Yes, I know.  You are probably ready to bop me over the head with something heavy.  It's just hard for me to accept a limitation like this, because I probably could get a position and do a damn good job at it.  AND be just fine in an emergency just a little short of breath.  And there are so many positions sitting empty that I just keep reasoning that I'm smart enough to make up for this and "better than no one".

I welcome your reactions even if they are violent.  ;)

There just may be something possible in that field you can handle if it's your passion you will find it! Although you hate desk jobs, emergency planning will have a lot of that! :)
It's not like you want to be an EMT, that I may discourage due to the scents, smells, chemicals heat, etc you come upon but in emergency management there are so many avenues! And if you had an "emergency" you are surrounded by a lot of Doctor Mc Steamy's to attend to you anyway right? Firemen, doctors, emt's etc just make sure your co-workers are well informed of your protocol and you avoid the obvious pitfalls  that trigger you!!  If stress is your number one trigger then ummmm no no girlfriend! But if it's not your major and is a minor then it's possible. Stress isn't so much a major trigger for me, yeah it will happen but my majors are environmental, chemical, foods, meds and temperature fluctuations.  Now Mother in Law stress, that'll trigger me everytime :o

Don't let the diseae stand in your way any more than it has to.  Take a realistic look at the demands, then see if you can find a position that will fit the level you can tolerate.

If you think you could do it, and it would energize you, then go for it!
