If you aren't already, it would be good to consult with an osteoporosis specialist.  Often, bisphosphonates are the best for many people with osteoporosis, but some people have a calcitonin deficiency, for which  they can take calcitonin salmon (a nasal spray).  Studies have shown that weight-bearing exercise increases bone density.  Walking and lifting weights are excellent for improving the hip, femur, and spine.  I went from osteoporotic to normal in both spine and hips using calcitonin salmon, walking at least a mile/day, lifting weights 3-5 times a week for 30 minutes, and doing yoga.  It took about 1 1/2 years to get to normal, and I think I started out at -2.5.  Of course that might not work for everyone, but there is hope!

I have been monitored for about 3 years now and have osteopenia.  Each year my bone density has decreased.  I am 52.  They put me on Evista and I had a severe side effect that I didn't immediately relate to Evista, hemorrhaging. Just wanted to pass it along to females being asked to take this drug for bone loss.
