Title: Medical Bracelets
Post by Lisa on 01/03/11 at 12:09:09

Hello everyone
I have been shopping medical bracelets and I am having a hard time thinking of what to put on mine (besides anaphylactic shock). I know there are some older posts on what some of you have
written yours but I didn’t have any luck finding it. I have not figured out any of my triggers yet so I am wondering if I should add anything like contrast just as a precautionary measure or not?  What are some examples of what you all have?

Thanks
Tracey

0   permalink Post Admin: delete | spam Hi Tracey,
Here's all that my bracelet says:

MY NAME
ANAPHYLAXIS
USE EPI PEN
ANESTHESIA CAUTION

I don't have any other conditions that could turn into a life-threatening situation at the ER... there are some things like diabetes, latex allergy, Addison's disease, etc... that would be worth including on a bracelet in addition to "anaphylaxis."  The cause of anaphylaxis doesn't really matter in the ER.  The treatment is exactly the same.  There's time for discussion later when you're stabilized :)

Hi Tracey,

Heather's right, but I also have "systemic mastocytosis" on mine, since I'm probably more neurotic and fearful than Heather.  I thought if I were brought in needing pain meds, perhaps they'd find info on that on their computer system.

There are other meds that can cause direct histamine release, like quinolone antibiotics.  Don't know if they affect everyone, but I had an anaphylactic attack from Avelox (a quinolone).  Also, pain meds and some muscle relaxers.  There are lists online, but there isn't room enough on a bracelet for all of these!

My diagnosis is IA, but at the time I got a medical bracelet, Dr. Akin didn't know if I had IA or masto. He told me to put "anaphylaxis" on the bracelet because most docs won't know what masto is. So, mine says: Anaphylaxis. No Benedryl

(I get a rash from benedryl, by the way.)

Mine says "Mastocytosis, treat as anaphylaxis."

Severe Allergies, thats it. I dont want the uninformed rescuers assuming I have a breast disease. Treatment is pretty much the same as far as rescue treatment. Too large of a drug allergy list to put on a bracelet, Deborahs is necessary, Benadryl along with EPI is the first thing to be used in an emergency and she's allergic to Benadryl so it needs to be dominant information! If I get another I may switch it to Idopathic Anaphalaxis because so many things can trigger me. But I do not want to gamble with my rescue crew googling Systemic Mastocytosis, MCAD etc. no time for that! The Emergency Binder is the perfect solution, I've also heard some say they don't look for bracelets anymore so don't bother, I've not heard that from EMT's at all so wear it, some information is better than none!

I also have on it - see epi pen in bag.  I have wrapped Dr. Castell's emergency protocol around it with a rubber band as well as other instructions I printed off the TMS web site..
I have also distributed these guides to people in my office, my primary care doctor, my husband, kids et all.

I have a medical alert bracelet. Pretty boring looking, but my ER doc bro - in - law told me not to get one that is different material and looks like a regular bracelet because then docs won't notice it. So, as a compromise, I decided to spruce it up by adding Brighton dangling charms from it. I now get tons of compliments and it is still noticeable as a medical bracelet.

Ha ha, me again!

I've finally bought a medical bracelet! I can write my general info and heart condition in and also fill the rest of the stuff in later. I have to say that I'm very happy with it and it wasn't too expensive! Worth of checking out!

Did you get one of those velcro bracelets?  I have one (pink) from Lauren's Hope.  It's comfortable to wear, but unfortunately even permanent marker doesn't last very long for me on the plastic insert... less than two weeks.  My metal bracelet, on the other hand, is pretty comfortable, can go into the shower and the pool (I've done it many times), and the letters never fade because they're engraved.  Now the velcro bracelet just sits in my closet.  It's cute... it just didn't work as well as I expected.

Heather

ps - Good for you, though, for getting a bracelet!  That's a big step... and it's very important for your personal safety.

I usually take mine off when I'm going to the shower, but when I'll get "all" of my diagnoses I'll get it all printed on smaller paper and plasticized. That way it will last :) That velcro bracelets are really confy :)

This ones are made by Roadid and are really great, I'll get one somewhere in the future: http://www.roadid.com/Catalog.aspx?C=RoadID
Slim ones are cool, you can change the band easily and it comes in variety of colors :)

Ladies;
There was an article in our local Sunday paper (from the Chicago Tribune) all about medical bracelets & new manufacturers/styles. They vary widely in price, and there are at least 5 websites listed. Everything from beaded bracelets to watches. If anyone would like these websites, let me know. I'll be checking them out myself. I've seen the "typical styles" and am not impressed with the prices for how they look. :(
The Spots are ugly enough to be stuck wearing ! >:(

Hey Lori! It would be great if you could post the links!

Hey Enko;
Here are those sites; I will list (according to prices shown in the article) from lowest to highest:
www.hopepaige.com
www.laurenshope.com
www.stickyj.com
www.medicalert.com
www.medicalfashions.com
Some of these have numbers/codes to 24hr. services that have your personal info on file for emergency personnel to contact for more critical situations such as advance directives, but cost an extra fee. Some are simple beads, or swarovski crystals,etc...

I just ordered mine per my doctor and already feel like I won't wear it. The Mastocytosis Society said to put "Anaphylaxsis!" on it and I took that literally and put the exclamation point on there. Now I feel like that was a way over board and I don't want to wear it. I haven't even had to use my Epi pen once.  I think I just wasted $45.  :-[

Vivmjones,
Hey look at it this way, that $45.00 could save your life! If you have lived with mast cell disorder for very long you know how unpredictable it can be and if not- you will figure out how unpredictable it can be. Either way the braclet has your back.  Be sure to wear it and wear it on your left arm(EMTs check your pulse on your left arm)  After awhile you forget about it.  I never take mine off so I don't have to remember to put it back on!
Remember, it will talk for you when you can't!
Pam

I wear a pendant that says....

Mastocytosis
 subject to
Anaphylaxis
treat with EPI
papers in purse

the letters are printed in red on the back of the medical alert logo

it is not expensive ...the chain is not good but I replaced it with a gold chain.
and I always carry my treatment papers in a plastic big in my purse
