Title: Re: What is your emergency protocol or habits that will provide best response for you in an emergency? Post by Lisa on 01/02/11 at 14:27:53 Archived from Original Forum - Starflower Author Here's a list of things I do to keep myself safe. 1) Take a bag full of medications every time I leave home (no exceptions!). This includes: - Two EpiPens Bottle of liquid Benadryl with dose cup (H1) - Small bottle of Pepcid Complete tablets (H2) - Tylenol (the only safe OTC pain reliever for me) - A container with a five-day supply of all my regular pills - A bottle of eye drops (driving can really dry my eyes out) - Benadryl cream for any sudden itchies 2) This bag also has a letter that I typed myself. It lists my: - Emergency treatment plan (with names and exact doses of drugs) - Contact information for my doctors - Contact information for my family Health insurance policy information - Current list of medications I'm taking (with doses) - A brief medical history including diagnoses List of allergens and triggers (plus what they do to me) 3) I keep my cell phone charged and carry it with me so I can always call for help 4) I wear a medical alert bracelet that says My name Anaphylaxis Use EpiPen Anesthesia caution These are the most important things someone should know if I faint or get into car accident (God forbid). The rest of my medical history is in the letter. If you don't have a bracelet already you should definitely get one... focus on the things that EMTs need to know. Everyone knows what "anaphylaxis" is, but not "mastocytosis." Include things like "diabetic" and "latex allergy," but don't worry about non-emergencies like "celiac disease." I don't go jogging, but if I did I would carry my bag and cellphone with me in a little backpack. I would also exercise with a partner or stick to well-travelled areas. You don't want to end up in trouble somewhere alone! Post by Lisa on 01/02/11 at 14:35:18 Archived from Original Forum - jnjtbmoore author So should I order a med alert bracelet?? I do go jogging, right now inside a gym. I never thought about keeping my emergency card with me!!! I'm out of habit I suppose. Better get myself into habit. Usually I do workout with my co-workers and my kickboxing instructor is well aware of my disease. Hugs, Nichole |

Post by Lisa on 01/02/11 at 14:36:15 Archived from Original Forum - starflower author Hey Nichole, It's great that your co-workers and exercise partners are so supportive, but there must be times when you're alone. What if you were in a car accident on the way to pick up your kids? What if a tornado hit your house? I hope these things never happen, but you should be prepared! Trauma is a serious trigger for anaphylaxis. Heather |
Title: Re: What is your emergency protocol or habits that will provide best response for you in an emergency? Post by Lisa on 01/02/11 at 14:37:16 Archived from Original Forum - jnjtbmoore author Heather, And I have thought about all of that too....I am ALONE alot with the kids running here and there and everywhere. I did purchase a separate little bag/case to keep all my meds in and an emergency alert card from the TMS site. I am going to start carrying it with me everywhere I go. I was wondering how many people actually wear a bracelet??? I have been toying with it for awhile. Nichole |
Title: Re: What is your emergency protocol or habits that will provide best response for you in an emergency? Post by Lisa on 01/02/11 at 14:38:20 Archived from Original Forum - kateswmo author I have both a Bracelet and a Necklace. I NEVER take my bracelet off. I even wear it in the shower. My necklace is higher end, 24 Karat Gold, so I only wear it when going to town either for business or whatever. American Medical ID is the company I got them from. They are relatively inexpensive. I purchased the chain for my necklace at Wal-Mart as they didn't have the size I wanted in stock. Kate |

There is an Emergency Protocols wiki page on Mastopedia: http://mastopedia.com/tiki-index.php?page=Emergency+Action+Plan At the moment it links off to the appropriate spot on TMS, which is a Doctor-endorsed PDF to modify as appropriate and carry around with you - a great little resource!!! Post by Lisa on 01/03/11 at 12:37:38 Archived from Original Forum - starflower author Next to my EpiPens, liquid Benadryl, Tylenol, and other goodies, I carry my emergency plan, a list of current medications, contact information for my family, and a brief medical history. I also wear a medical alert bracelet that says... My name Anaphylaxis Use EpiPen Anesthesia caution Oh, and... I try to keep my cell phone charged so I can always call for help. Heather |
