Title: Masto featured on House tonight!
Post by DeborahW, Founder on 10/03/11 at 15:15:43

First time ever: the tv show, House, featured Masto as its mystery disease tonight!! I rarely watch the show and for some reason turned it on tonight. Imagine my surprise when at the end Dr. House proclaimed the patient had Masto!!

Did they get it right? Well, not so much but they weren't off base either. They had the patient experience a rash, sensitive bone pain, and finally anaphylaxis. The anaphylaxis was portrayed through breathing problems rather than our usual GI systemic symptoms. To diagnose the patient, they gave him 3 aspirin because that "would put him into anaphylaxis and thus prove he had Masto.". Haaa. Sure it does. I bet our docs will love to know this new and easy way to diagnose Masto. LOL The characters in the show even referred to it as Masto after calling it mastocytosis the first time.

For those who missed it, you should be able to watch it on hulu.com tomorrow, 10/4/11. You could also try online fox tv.

I wasn't entirely paying close attention to the show until the end, so I wasn't figuring out that they were leading up to Masto. Did you have any clue, Kim?

I didn't at all. They really didn't play up too many symptoms.

Aspirin aggrevated some of my anaphalax-is-sing (That's my new made-up word, do you like it : the process of being anaphylaxed?)

I doubt that would ever be a "diagnostic" though, even though it could be a good clue.  Can you imagine the liability of doing that kind of thing to somebody?  I don't think the insurance carriers would buy into that one! :o

Now if they wanted to really mix it up, they should have had the person trigger to all sorts of bizarre things, like we sometimes do, that would have made the plot more of a brain-twisty!

I missed this episode.  Is there anyway I could find out when they might re-run it?

jbean,

I checked out the FOX website after reading Deborah's post; it looks like you can watch it at http://www.fox.com/house/ 8 days after it initially aired; so hopefully next Tuesday it will be there; it doesn't look too promising though because even though the site says 8 days; it looks like they only have episodes posted through 8/24; so I don't know if there will be a longer delay or not.

I still haven't checked out hulu; but I'm going to...  I'm curious about this one -- lol :)

Ok; I'm back -- I checked out http://hulu.com and you can watch the episode today with one of their paid subscriptions...  Looks like they are doing a 1 week trial and then it's $7.99 / month; but it also says that it will be available on FOX.COM as of 10/11 (8 days after it aired)...

I'm excited about it; but I've got too many subscriptions that I never can convince myself to cancel -- lol :) -- I'm going to try to wait until next week...

But if anyone catches it before I hope they will update the thread; I am curious to see what everyone's thoughts are.

Look at hulu again. It is free. Hulu plus is $7.99, but that is to watch past seasons of shows. You should be able to watch this one for free. Try it. (Unless this episode is an exception and you need hulu plus to watch it. They do that with some shows.) I have hulu plus, but before I got it I could watch recent shows for free on regular hulu.

Sorry for the confusion on this one...  It is going to be free on HULU next week(I think; I may have read it wrong); I think you can watch it today if you pay for the HULU Plus...

It was the first time I've been on Hulu -- sorry about that :(

JBean;
LOL !!! ;D  Love your masto-ism "anaphalaxising". We should put that in the Masto book thats in the works: how about a whole section of masto-isms; for example, I use "TMEP-isode" when I'm having an attack. We gotta take this with a grain of salt and a sense of humor. (altho Id rather a slice of lemon n a shot of tequila) :D

I know what you mean. So many sypmtoms could have been added to that particular show. Well at least it's starting to make a show publicly! It's a start!

The aspirin part is really funny since Fabios drs have told him to try aspirin therapy! Fortunately he's not reactive to it...and yes wish it was that easy to figure out and diagnose! I have felt like I have been living in an episode of House for over a yr and love it when people tell me I need a Dr House to help me!
